Choosing atomic structure material
Whole-class demonstration: the Atoms, Electrons and Energy Kit is a magnetic set for a class of 30 covering the first 36 elements, with colour-coded magnetic nuclei, s, p and d orbitals and a magnetic periodic table. The Magnetic Atom Model Set uses a 16 x 16 in whiteboard with worksheets for 10 elements, ions and isotopes.
Student model building: the Economy Atomic Model builds Bohr models up to atomic number 18 and comes as an individual set or a class set for 16 models, with a teacher manual. The Atomic Orbital Set makes 14 s, p and d orbital models on display bases, and the Sublevel Orbitals kit supplies 12 models and 30 worksheets.
Inclusive teaching: the Interactive Atom Set was developed for visually impaired students, with charges moulded on each particle and orbitals as raised rings, so the structure can be seen or felt.
Rutherford scattering without radioactivity: the Alpha Particle Scattering Analogue rolls steel balls from a wooden launching ramp at an aluminium hill, a gravitational analogue of Coulomb repulsion, for grade 9 to college.
Emission and electrons: the Flame Test Kit supports 30 students in 6 groups testing 6 metals with a spectroscope, ending in identification of an unknown metal.
The two radioactive sources
The Beta-Particle Source (Sr-90, half-life 28.79 years) and the Gamma-Ray Source (Co-60, half-life 5.27 years) are sealed in clear epoxy disks marked with the element and isotope. Neither listing publishes an activity level, and activity is the figure that determines dose rate. The manufacturer describes both as safe for classroom use; that statement cannot be assessed without the activity. Possession, use, import, transport and disposal of radioactive sources are regulated: establish with your institution and national regulator what applies, and obtain the activity, a sealed-source certificate, the shipping classification and the disposal route before ordering. Because Co-60 has a 5.27-year half-life, its activity halves roughly every five years, so its useful classroom life is much shorter than that of the Sr-90 source.
What to confirm before you order
Specification to confirm | Why it matters |
Radioactive source documentation | Activity, sealed-source certificate, shipping classification, regulatory authorisation and disposal route for the Sr-90 and Co-60 sources. None is published. |
Chemical contents and safety data | The flame test, luminol and solubility kits contain chemicals. Ask for the contents list and safety data sheets, and confirm shelf life and any shipping restrictions. |
Class size | Published for some kits only (30 for the Atoms, Electrons and Energy Kit and the Flame Test Kit, 32 for the Atomic Theory Kit, 1 to 3 per Dark Detector kit). Confirm student numbers for the others. |
Equipment needed | The Flame Test Kit uses a spectroscope and a flame, and the Molecular Spectroscopy kit is built around absorbance measurements. Confirm what equipment the kit includes and what the laboratory must supply. |
Duplicate listing | Periodic Table Cards appear in this family and in the Periodic Table family with identical published specifications. Order one listing only. |
Misfiled items | The Making Sense of Solubility Kit and the Building a Dark Detector Kit cover solubility and an electronics light sensor, not atomic structure. Check they match the syllabus line you are buying for. |
Who buys this range

Frequently asked questions
What does the atomic structure range contain?
Eighteen items: 6 atom and orbital model sets, 5 atomic theory investigations, 3 kits on light and electrons, 2 sealed radioactive sources and 2 kits filed here on other topics (solubility and an electronics light sensor).
Which atomic model suits a whole class?
The Atoms, Electrons and Energy Kit is designed for a class of 30 and covers the first 36 elements with magnetic nuclei, orbitals and a periodic table. The Economy Atomic Model is also sold as a class set with materials for 16 Bohr models up to atomic number 18.
Is there an atomic model for visually impaired students?
Yes. The Interactive Atom Set was developed for visually impaired students: protons and electrons carry moulded plus and minus signs, neutrons a flat surface, and orbitals are raised rings, so the structure can be felt as well as seen.
Can Rutherford scattering be taught without a radioactive source?
Yes. The Alpha Particle Scattering Analogue uses an aluminium hill, steel balls and a wooden launching ramp as a gravitational analogue of Coulomb repulsion, and needs no radioactive source.
What is needed before ordering the radioactive sources?
The activity of each source, a sealed-source certificate, the shipping classification, any regulatory authorisation and a disposal route. None is published, and possession, import and disposal of radioactive sources are regulated.
Can atomic structure material be supplied against a tender?
Yes. State the items, the class size each must support, any chemical or equipment requirements and the quantity, so the quotation can be matched line by line.
